Much of my work contemplates the natural world, our relationship to it and the way we search to express ourselves through our interpretation of it. We have a need to structure, classify, divide and structure the world around us. Throughout most of my work I use patterns as the foundation over which I construct an image. The pattern is a metaphor for our culture and its conventions and its need for order and understanding.

At times these patterns appear torn to reveal other layers of history, memory, and nostalgia for the past. Into these patterns I incorporate detailed renderings of Australian flora and fauna. In recent work I have focused mainly on birds. Birds are an expressive and challenging subject. They are such beautiful creatures, with which we have many and varied relationships filled with poetry and symbolism.
